The Design of Your Workspace Matters
Most people spend the majority of their time working—or sleeping. That’s why your work space should be a place that energizes you when you walk through the door, not one that has you feeling ready to run the other way. The right office blueprint will not only boost your energy and creativity, but will also make a big impact on efficiency. The design of your work space matters, from the corporate office to the home office, a personal touch goes a long way. In his PsychCentral article, “Personalized Workspace Helps Attitude Adjustment,” Rick Nauert, Ph.D. refers to a U.K. study that shows people who are comfortable in their work spaces are more engaged and those who were allowed to design and personalize their own work space were 32 percent more productive than those who weren’t.
With the increase of remote work and office flexibility, it’s becoming more and more common to see creative and unique work spaces. Your office environment should be an extension of your work and personality. What is your purpose or intentions each day? Believe it or not, paints and patterns can play a significant role in your productivity level and the ability to focus. It’s important to take a hard look at your daily routine and functions before investing in your office upgrade. A job that requires attention to detail or needs a quieter feel should exhibit earth & spice tones or warm neutrals. Work that requires a lot of communication or group collaboration should reveal bright and bold decor including colors like orange and reds or purples and blues. Your routine should also be considered before determining the right furniture. A lot of solo or 1:1 meetings in your work space requires less seating needs, which allows for more comfort and less functionality. On the other hand, if your work space is a hub for constant activity and group meetings, your seating will play a key role in your work space success.
What if the design of your office could also help you maximize your productivity? It can! Start by surrounding yourself with the things that bring you closer to your goals. This can include pictures of your favorite places to travel, family and friends, or other motivational decor. Including functional furniture is a sure way to boost organization and improve your daily outcomes. Your work environment can be both appealing and help you maximize your efficiency. Natural light can also play a key role in your work day success and energy as well. The 2016 study, “Why We Need More Nature at Work: Effects of Natural Elements and Sunlight on Employee Mental Health and Work Attitudes” investigated the effects of natural elements such as direct and indirect sunlight exposure on employee mental health and work attitudes. It found that exposure to sunlight at work is directly related to employee mood. Obviously, sunlight in our work space isn’t always attainable, but there are things you can do to brighten your work space in other ways. Sun lamps, bright walls, and large prints are just a few creative ways to lighten a room. Adding a patch of green space, like a plant, will also increase oxygen levels and improve your energy.
Let’s be realistic, even with all the sunlight in the world we can’t work the entire time we’re at work. In fact, not taking a break can lead to loss of concentration and distraction. Reserving a small part of your work space for breaks can help you reset during stressful situations or get your second wind on long days. For extremely tight spaces, even the addition of an ottoman to prop your feet on can do the trick.
There are lots of ways to incorporate both personality and professionalism into your space. It should reflect you personally and the love you have for your job. Don’t be afraid to be unique! A work space lacking creativity and personal touches can affect your energy. Choosing the right decor can awaken your enthusiasm and put your passion on display for others to absorb. Whether it be colleagues or customers it never hurts to leave a lasting impression.
